Artist: Elwin Lyon
Size: 18in x 24in
Medium: Oil on canvas
Story behind the artwork:
A painting within a painting is seen in this oil on canvas rendering of consumerism in the form of purchasing artworks for the purpose of improving aesthetics in the home. Paintings also communicate emotional ideas wherein the buyer feels a need to acquire said artwork. The lady in the painting in the background symbolizes a woman’s desire for buying pleasant things, hence she seems to be gazing at the flowers and vases in the foreground.

About the Artist
A full-time painter with considerable credentials and experience in psychology, Mary Elwin de Jesus – Manliclic finds painting as a unique way of capturing and expressing in canvas the metaphors of human nature: mind, emotions and behavior therein.
This innate passion for the humanities could be traced from an illustrious lineage: great grandfather Jose Corazon de Jesus a.k.a. Huseng Batute was a renowned filipino poet and writer; and grandfather uncle Carlo J. Caparas was a prolific comics writer, illustrator, movie director and producer. She became a finalist at a painting contest (Cebu National Art Competition) in 2011 – the first national art contest which she participated in. This lead her to pursue a career in art.
Elwin who signs her paintings Elwin Lyon adopting her father’s middle name had been an active member and officer of Pasig Art Club since 2008. She is also a pioneering member of the Portrait Artists Society of the Philippines, Inc. (PASPI) Manila Chapter in 2019 together with its Founding Chairperson and Filipino realism master painter Romulo “Mulong” Galicano.
Art sessions with Mulong and portraitist Romel de la Torre further honed her skills in handling different mediums. This and her frequent hang outs and heedings with professional artists such as Danilo Arriola are other key factors in the crystallization of her artistic outlook.
Exhibiting consistently since 2009, Elwin had also been an art instructor in various drawing and painting workshops. She had participated in art projects with the Fernando Amorsolo Art Foundation, Lipeño Youth Artists, the Pasig City Museum and the City Government of Pasig.
